5. Code Vein
There have been a good bit of Soulsborne-like clones since Dark Souls hit the scene in the US back in 2011. They were all unique in some regards, despite them being referred to as “clones”. For instance, Lords of the Fallen was much weightier and had plenty of differing elements that I couldn’t exactly describe right now. And Nioh was both faster paced and slower paced at the same time. Your attacks were faster, but it took longer to kill enemies. Even putting aside the gameplay differences, each of those souls-like games built their own, unique worlds.
I’ve also not really been interested in either of those all that much, personally. However, when it comes to the so called “Anime Souls,” I am very much intrigued! Code Vein’s combat looks the most similar to that of the Soulsborne series, but uses that to make itself different. There is an emphasis on using your companions to help you in combat and using Code Vein’s unique style of vampire abilities to defeat your foes. Especially with the heavy Anime-style narrative and visuals, it has gotten me incredibly excited to get my hands on it! Even if it has been delayed to 2019 instead of coming out back in September, like it was originally set to. I’m not upset though. Hopefully it leads to higher quality and greater quantity.
4. Anthem
This is a game that I am actually really nervous about. Since it was announced, I have felt that it has almost too much potential to live up to. There are many games that I have seen suffer from such things. A sci-fi action MMO from the developers of the Mass Effect Trilogy? Hell yes, please! But from the gameplay that we’ve seen, I still am having a hard time getting a good read on it. On one hand, it looks like it will have unique, fun, and exciting combat with some great chances to perform awesome combos with your friends. And it sounds like there is going to be a strong story and a very interesting and different, but not too different, world. Sounds kind of like Bioware.
The problems I have with it at this point though is that the combat looks like it could be very light and not really have that satisfying feel to it. And while Bioware has delivered some fantastic stories, some have landed about as strong as a feather onto a cloud. And remember Andromeda? Yeah, I don’t want to either. Still, as I said, Anthem has a lot of promise to it and the more I’ve seen, the more hyped I am getting about this game. Luckily, it’s not too far off now.
3. Devil May Cry 5
Finally, a game that I have had a chance to play a bit of. I’ve been a fan of the Devil May Cry franchise for quite a while. Maybe not long by many hardcore fans’ standards, only since the fourth entry, but that’s still almost 11 years now! After I played DMC 4, I went back to play the original trilogy on the PS2. And that had two really great games as well as the second one. What was a fun surprise was that I also got a dvd of the short-lived anime that existed for the franchise. The show was only 12 episodes and release back in 2007 (a years before the fourth game in the series) but they were great. I even got into the rebooted DMC a bit after it released and saw that the game wasn’t as horrible of an attempted reboot as I feared! I just didn’t like that they bashed the classic gray-haired look that Donte sported in all the other games.
If you haven’t played the Devil May Cry 5 demo on the Xbox One yet, I highly recommend it if you are a fan of fast-paced action hack n’ slash games. It’s a pretty different game for the series in some ways, and I’m a bit nervous about how some of the weapons like the motorcycle will handle, but I’m super hyped! The Devil May Cry series does a good job at adding fun, new features to each title without ever losing the identity of Devil May Cry. And the incredible new look as well as introducing new characters and bringing back classic ones that we didn’t see much of in 4, has made this game a must-play for me in 2019!
2. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Ah, Fromsoftware. I’ve missed you since I finished your last Souls game back in August. The promise of “the toughest game” that Fromsoftware has ever made makes this game extremely high up on my list of must-plays in 2019. I know I will be overwhelmed right off the gate in this game, but I fully intend to still stream my misery and frustration as I die over and over in this ninja-souls nightmare! If you’ve seen my attempts at completing a no-death run of Dark Souls 3, then you should know I’m not ready for this game. But nothing will stop me from dying my way through this game and then watching VaatiVidya’s videos explaining the story once I realize that I missed about 80% of what happened.
This game has been on my radar ever since it was first teased and everyone thought it was Bloodborne 2. To me, it looks like what I first expected Nioh to be, but then I found out that it wasn’t anything like what I wanted. If you aren’t in the loop about this game, you basically are a Batman ninja (which sounds redundant and they made it into an Anime, but trust me, it’s different and still works as an analogy). Actually, I might have to consider the main character more as a ninja cyborg. Either way, it’s awesome and I can’t wait to get my hands on this wonderful this in March.
1. Mortal Kombat 11
I’ve seriously been waiting for this game to be announced since I beat MKX. Mortal Kombat has been my favorite franchise since I was way too young to play it, but did anyways at arcades. I loved the titles that now seem like they shouldn’t have deserved any love. Often I’ll look back at Mortal Kombat: Deception and think, “wow, this game is just bad. Why did I love it so much?” But then I really think about it and realize that there was so much to love and the only thing I didn’t love about it was that there was not enough of it. Especially once I beat it so many times and had the guide to help me find everything, I still would think, “there just has to be more stuff that I didn’t find!” But there wasn’t. Anyways, I’m gonna stop talking about Deception and make my way back to my point.
MORTAL KOMBAT 11 HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED!!! And I am so happy, even though I clearly knew it would be after Injustice 2 released. Recently what I’ve been looking forward to in these games is the story. It didn’t always mean that much to me, especially the original four in the arcades. But once I got into it with Deadly Alliance and then again with the timey-wimey format change in Mortal Kombat 9, I’ve been very anxious to see what they end up going for. Next to that however, I’m really interested in seeing how they take the ideas from Injustice 2’s gear system and adapt it to Mortal Kombat. And I have so many questions about how the gameplay will be evolving that I may actually pre-order this game. That is how hyped this game is for me. I may actually pre-order a game before anyone has reviewed it anywhere! The hype that I have for this game is real. And I am afraid for myself.
Honorable Mentions
Some games I just couldn’t put on this list that I really wanted to. I’ll try to just mention them quick and provide a brief explanation for my omission.
- Days Gone – I just felt that this game looks a little too familiar and as good as it looks, I find it difficult to believe that it will even be comparable to The Last of Us. And it looks way too similar to not draw comparisons.
- The Last of Us Part 2 – Speaking of TLOU, the only reason I didn’t include this is because we don’t have a solid release date on it yet. And I believe it might be pushed back. But I do indeed have great expectations for the second part.
- Resident Evil 2 – I am looking forward to this, but I simply did made a decision to not include remakes/remasters to this list.
- Kingdom Hearts 3 – This one was a bit tough, but I personally haven’t played the first two, and therefore did not feel that I could justly say whether or not I am personally hyped for this game.
- Jump Force – I really did want to include this, but I fear that it is going to be more flashy than substantial.
- Rage 2 – Actually looks extremely fun! But I forgot about it honestly and I have a feeling that this game will just be missed by many in 2019 because it looks somewhat generic and is a sequel to a less than successful shooter.
- Jedi: Fallen Order – Just unsure that it will actually release in 2019 if it does come out at all. (I’ve been hurt by 1313 and will never hype for another Star Wars game again)
- Doom Eternal – Undetermined release date
- Biomutant – Undetermined release date
- Skull and Bones – I don’t think it will live up to the promises. Also undetermined release date.
- Ghosts of Tsushima – Undetermined release date
- Death Stranding – Definitely on my most hyped list! But undetermined release date.
- Cyberpunk 2077 – Undetermined release date
- Halo Infinite – Undetermined release date
- Elder Scrolls 6 – Is there actually any chance at all that this is coming in 2019? I don’t think so.
So, sadly there are many games that would have been on this list, except that I am just not convinced that they will all actually release this year. And beyond that, I can only afford so much stuff!
