DC comics fans got their wish last September of a streaming service catered to their desires. A place to read comics, watch DC-inspired shows, and enjoy a community of fans, was released in September of last year. Four months in and we have a steady growth in new shows and other media to enjoy. The site is one of the first of many exclusive streaming services to be released, with more to come in the near future. So, is DC Universe worth the trouble?
DC has really reeled in fans with their animated and live action media. DCU pulled out their big guns by releasing 1978’s Superman, with Christopher Reeve and 1989’s Batman, with Michael Keaton. I was impressed with seeing the animated movies as well, though what’s available could shift from month to month. The animated series and live shows really give us our money’s worth with Batman: The Animated Series, Teen Titans, Justice League/Unlimited, Static Shock and more. DC isn’t afraid to show us everything, from the oddball Batman sequels to Super Friends and serials. They show us how far DC has come to bring their stories to life.
A comic selection can also be found and provides a fun, rotating list of old and new issues. It’s fun to read stories from the Golden/Silver ages and modern storylines from New 52/Rebirth. It’s provided an alternative comic reader that helps fans enjoy reading in an easier and cheaper format.
Promise of new shows are also coming soon. DC and Warner Bros can have a medium to be edgy and showcase other properties. Fans love the site for giving the long awaited Titans TV series and Young Justice season 3. This year will bring Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing, and everyone’s favorite sexy clown lady, Harley Quinn, in as new series. DCAU (animated universe) movies will appear soon after their mainstream release date.
Still, the service does present some problems that potential subscribers may find troubling. The DCEU’s entries and current DC TV series are missing as they are stuck on other streaming sites due to contracts. We won’t see Man of Steel, Wonder Woman, or any shows like Arrow, Gotham, Legends or Flash. DCU will have to find a way to make up for these missing pieces to stay appealing. Some technical issues and its current availability don’t allow it to reach the biggest audience, with it not being out on app stores or consoles. DCU needs to expand its horizons to compete with present and future streaming sites. Still, it’s worth the trial for a DC Comics fan.
