Video Game Life Lessons: With help from my friends
We all need help sometimes
Plenty of games are single player only and can be some of the most enjoyable experiences. Maybe they take us on a memorable adventure, teach us something about ourselves and overcoming challenges on our own. Maybe they just make us feel like we are invincible and give us an incredible sense of power that we don’t get in our daily lives. But sometimes even in single player games we can learn something about humility. That no matter how skilled or powerful we may be, some challenges simply cannot be overcome by ourselves. Sometimes we require the support of others.
Life often throws things at us that we are unfit to handle alone. Be it a major life change that you are not emotionally strong enough for by yourself and require your friends and family to be there to provide emotional support. Or a physical task like moving out of your house/apartment and into a new one. And for that situation, it always helps to have a friend with a pickup truck! The point being, there are a number of situations that require having people in your life that you can turn to when you need help.
Here again, the Soulsborne series is a major influence on my life in helping to teach me this. There were a number of bosses throughout all the games that I found myself struggling with for hours until I finally decided to look for assistance. Sometimes this didn’t even really mean that I needed somebody to just kill the boss for me, though I have done that and I felt ashamed, but just that I need to watch somebody with more experience approach a fight in a way that I had not even considered. Some bosses were also just easier when I was given time to do my own thing while another player kept the attention of the boss.
Everybody has something different to contribute. Not everything is going to be useful in the same capacity in every situation, but there is a situation for every skill. World of Warcraft does a fantastic job teaching this lesson. A new raid will not be possible for even the best player to complete on their own. Fights often require a variety of classes and some have required a very specific ability that only a certain class build might have. For instance, in the original version of the game (or Vanilla WoW as fans might refer to it as) it was often important to have a more standard tank, like a warrior in heavy armor to take the brunt of the damage and then have an off-tank, like a shaman (on the Horde side) to soak up anything that the main tank was unable to take.
Similarly, every person has skills that are helpful in different situations. In an office it is likely to have people that are skilled at handling money, people who have better social skills, and people who can manage others better. None of these jobs are necessarily better than the others, but they are all different, and equally important. If there is nobody to bring in the money, there is no reason to have people to keep track of the money.
The most important fact that I have taken from this lesson personally, is that no single person can do everything on their own. When facing seemingly impossible challenges, it is important to remember that you are not in this world alone. Because friends can make impossible tasks, possible.
